A laid back, highly personalised tour offering some unique
insights into the fascinating cultural and spiritual life
of the Balinese.
Day 1 - Arrival
Arrival and transfer to Tugu Hotel, Canggu. Dinner with your
guides to discuss plans for the days ahead.
Day 2 - At leisure
Chill out at the hotel and enjoy the beach.
Day 3 - Ubud
Check out mid-morning and after lunch on Eat Street in Seminyak,
take a leisurely drive up to Ubud. Possible accommodation
here ranges from the Alam Indah (http://alam-indah.com/),
a lovely, family run hotel in a tiny village next to Ubud
with incredibly attentive staff and very peaceful and quiet
to Ibah (http://www.ibahbali.com/), an upmarket, boutique
hotel tucked away near the center of Ubud town. There are
also numerous private villas in the area if you prefer something
more private.
Day 4 - Ubud
Early morning walk through the rice paddies. Then set off
to visit the ARMA museum (Agung Rai Museum of Art) where you
can watch the children's gamelan and dance classes. Afternoon
free before visiting a temple festival in the evening.
Day 5 - Mount Batur - Ubud
In the morning visit to Batur lake, volcano and temple followed
by lunch at Kampung Café. In the afternoon, visit some of
the artisans working in the Ubud area.
Day 6 - Walking, Rafting, Dance Performance
Early morning village walk to visit a typical Balinese home
and traditional market. In the afternoon, go rafting on the
Ayung River. In the evening, enjoy the Semara Ratih dance
performance.
Day 7
Head to Batukaru in West Bali for a walk through the forest
and a picnic lunch. Visit a traditional farmer's village and
home before returning to Ubud.
Day 8
Possible visit to a Balinese cremation - a rare privilege
and experience quite unlike any other. In the evening attend
a performance of the Kecak. Of all the dances seen on Bali
today, the Kecak dance is perhaps the most dramatic. Taken
from the Hindu epic Ramayana, the dance tells the story of
Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been
kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka. Unlike other dances,
there is no gamelan orchestra accompanying it. Instead, a
troupe of over 150 bare-chested men serve as the chorus, making
a wondrous cacophony of synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking
sounds while swaying their bodies and waving their hands.
Day 9
If you're feeling adventurous, set off at 3 am to climb Mt
Batur and witness the sunset from the peak. Later in the day,
take a tour through west Bali en route for the sea. Visit
a gamelan foundry, weaving foundry, the Hall of Justice, and
the painting and silver village of Tengana Bali Aga.
Small group departures of this itinerary
run throughout the year and it can also be run as a tailor-made
